UID, Umeå Institute of Design
The Institute, founded in 1989, celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2009. UID provides a creative study environment with new facilities adapted to their purpose and with a high level of equipment. The education is characterized by close cooperation with the industry. The Design Research Group at Umeå Institute of Design conducts research in several areas and a doctoral program in industrial design is available.
We provide academic programmes focusing exclusively on industrial design and related specializations. Programmes range from one year courses to Bachelor's, Master's and Doctoral levels.

Centre of Excellence in Higher Education
Umeå Institute of Design has been awarded as Centre of Excellence in Higher Education by the Swedish National Agency for Higher Education. An international expert panel has evaluated the quality of the education at UID through assessment of a written report and through interviews with students and staff at a site visit in the autumn of 2008.
One main aspect that the National Agency highlights as excellent at UID is the pedagogic system of combining a permanent in-house teaching staff with practitioners and experts from the industry. This gives an excellent balance between scientific research, artistic foundation and practical skills. The expert panel writes: "The highly competent staff works jointly and continuously towards a common goal. This takes the form of a central educational concept grounded in a tangible project in cooperation with industry and supported by highly competent teachers from industry and from the Institute."
