Umeå Design Research Group Presents Work at IASDR 2007

Daniel Fallman, Research Director at Umeå Institute of Design, will present his paper "Supporting Studio Culture in Design Research” at this year’s IASDR conference in Hong Kong, China.

Fallman’s paper suggests that while the concept of studio-based work seems central to both practice and education in many traditional design disciplines, such as architecture and industrial design, the style of studio-based work itself is surprisingly enough quite rarely discussed—it is a way of working and being that is more or less taken for granted. In this paper, Fallman looks specifically at the notion of a studio culture in the context of design research. Is it possible to carry out design research with the attitudes typically found in a design studio culture? How does studio culture compare to more traditional academic ways of organizing work?

The International Association of Societies of Design Research, IASDR, is organizing this large bi-annual interdisciplinary design conference. It includes architects, communication, environmental, interior, and product designers who resonate to the themes of collaboration, creativity, culture, emotion, history, interaction, methods, perception, sustainability, teaching, technology, and user behavior with an interest in how research can improve professional performance and advance knowledge in design. This year, the keynote speakers include: Kees Dorst, Kun-Pyo Lee, Larry Leifer, Steven Kyffin, Henry Steiner, and Surya Vanka.
