Umeå Institute of Design organizes weekly lectures related to various topics and perspectives on design. This year, all presentations are taking place in the Green Room Wednesday afternoon. These lectures are public and open to everyone.

Finnish form, does it exist?
Eero Miettinen started his career at Oy Sisu-Auto AB, where he designed heavy-load trucks and industrial tractors. He was subsequently appointed head of design at Oy Saab-Valmet AB, where he focused on automobile design. His team designed the Saab convertible range. He has been at Nokia as a design director and right now Eero is at Aalto university in Helsinki Finland. Industrial designer Eero Miettinen was awarded the Kaj Franck design prize in 2001.

Floda31 is a unique facility for creative exploration and innovation. Set near the arctic circle in north Sweden, we will convert a traditional Swedish farm into a state-of-the-art laboratory featuring computing, mechanics, rapid prototyping,
screen printing, woodworking and more. We believe that sustainability should be tackled by collaboration between disciplines. Science, politics, law, design, architecture and art all play a part. Floda31 will be a location for specialists from various professions to meet, collaborate and create solutions.

Daniel Hirshman
South Africa
Daniel Hirschmann is a South Africa born artist who uses technology, relationships and spontaneity to enable his artistic practice. His portfolio includes responsive sculpture, interactive spaces and generative prints which have been exhibited in shows around the world, most notably, the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the V&A in London, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Nice, and the Resolution Gallery in Johannesburg. He built on his Fine Arts studies with a Masters at NYU&s Interactive Telecommunications Program - where he specialised in physical computing and interactive sculpture. He has lectured at various highly respected institutions around the globe. Until recently he was the lead interactive designer at the internationally acclaimed Jason Bruges Studio. He is currently based in London, consulting on and producing physically responsive installations.
