"design [...] is where you stand with a foot in two worlds-the world of technology and the world of people and human purposes-and you try to bring the two together." Mitchell Kapor

The 7th annual SIDeR Conference, Student Interaction Design Research Conference, takes place at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU), in Copenhagen on Thursday and Friday April 14-15. Eight students from the Interaction Design programme at UID were selected to participate. The theme for this year&s conference is Engaging Interaction in Design.

The participating students from UID are Lynn Bui and Harry Clayton Cook from USA, Alexis Morin and Jessica Myra from Canada, Vivian Wai Ying Lo from Australia, Amid Moradganjeh from Iran, Miguel Peres from Brazil and Sharon Williams from Spain.

Alexis Morin&s paper focuses on programming tools for interaction design soft-sketching, and he proposes a return to production programming environments in order to allow hardware and software sketches to fulfill their original goal: deliver a partial look and feel of the idea being designed.

The paper "Eco-cart" for sustainable consumption by Amid Moradganjegh and George Paravantes describes the design method and process in the approach to changing consumer behavior and perceptions of sustainable consumption and introduces a design concept for promoting sustainable purchase behavior.

Jess Myra wrote a paper called Assistive mobile devices for the professional user in heavy industry where she presents a touch screen GUI (Graphical User Interface) redesign and palm-sized assistive mobile device as a tool for shaft alignment procedures, in heavy industry.

How capturing data guided the direction of our research: our attempt to reduce student consumption is a paper by Lynn Bui and Linus Persson and their report aims at building awareness around the student consumption of paper towels in the student kitchen, and ultimately at changing student behavior on their use of paper towels.

Miguel Peres and Vivian Lo's paper Creative engagement as a data gathering method outlines a user-centered and participatory method to collect data on coffee consumption within a school setting.

The paper Interpreting the interpretation by Sharon Williams describes the process of peer portraying a member of a group, and reflects on the veracity of data gathered based on interviews as a research method.

Harry Clayton Cook's Work methods coordinated with digital tools examines the relationship between digital tools and their use in the work environment, and asks the question: Is technology a user aid or distraction?

Last year the conference was held at Umeå Institute of Design and previous years it has taken place at various universities in Sweden, Denmark and the Netherlands. The conference serves as a venue for interaction students to share perspectives, build networks and to reflect on design practice.
