Communication Officer, Umeå Institute of Design and Umeå School of Architecture

Umeå Institute of Design and Umeå School of Architecture are two departments within the Faculty of Science and Technology and a part of Arts Campus at Umeå University.

Umeå Institute of Design conducts education and research in the subject of Industrial Design on an artistic foundation and the education in industrial design is internationally one of the leading of its kind. This is built on a strong teaching commitment, advanced equipment, excellent facilities and an open and creative climate. One of the things that characterizes the school is a close and long term collaboration with the industry and the surrounding society. Our educations attract students from all over the world and at present we have students from 27 different countries. The students are highly sought after on the labor market after their graduation.

Umeå School of Architecture is becoming an international laboratory for experimental architecture where both education and research is conducted. Umeå School of Architecture has 250 study places within a five-year Architect Programme. Architects are educated through artistic training and focus on integrated methods of design. The employment as a Communication Officer is a full-time permanent position equally divided between Umeå Institute of Design and Umeå School of Architecture. The start date is 2012-11-01 or as agreed. Trial employment can be applied.

We will offer you a stimulating and developing work where you coordinate external and internal communication, market the departments and make them visible in different contexts.

Main work tasks

As a Communication Officer you will build and develop communication strategies and media contacts. You will initiate and take part in production of communication- and information material, printed and digital. You are also responsible for the homepages of the departments. An important part of the work is to handle contacts with media and other stakeholders, both nationally and internationally. Examples of work tasks are proofreading, editing, translation and production of texts and responsibility for the presence of the departments in social networks. You will be handling the departments' activities in the Umeå University calendar of events, be responsible for the internal web of Umeå Institute of Design and be responsible for internal information and communication structures with staff and students. We expect that you continuously are working for developing the area of communication at Umeå Institute of Design and Umeå School of Architecture in close cooperation with the staff and students at Umeå Arts Campus, Umeå University and external actors and partners.

Competence requirements

You have a degree in information/communication, journalism or a matching competence. You have a very good ability to work with different text genres in relation to visual material and formulate messages for different target groups and purposes.  Your knowledge in English and Swedish are excellent, both verbal and written. Experience of communication and information work is a requirement. The work includes many internal and external contacts, which requires very good interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively with colleagues, clients and stakeholders at all levels. A good ability to organize things, structure, accuracy and ability to take initiative are traits that you possess.

Desirable qualifications

Experience of work in international contexts and environments are meritorious. We would like you to have experience of working in different web publishing tools and experience of photography and/or moving images. If you have worked within the artistic field and have had international contacts, it is a merit.
