Late application to Industrial Design Intensive

Late IDI application step by step

The on-line application service at for late applications to Industrial Design Intensive was opened January 16, 2019.

Deadline for application

Late application through will be open until we have filled the vacant spots, but no longer than April 15, 2019. Supporting documents and home assignments that arrive after April 30, 2019 will not be accepted.

General facts

Between 15 and 20 students are admitted to the course every year. Several exchange students may be accepted for one or two semesters.

Admission is based on applicant's documentation and home assignment.

The course is taught in English.

Tuition fees are covered by Swedish government grants for EU citizens. Scholarships from Umeå University/UID are not available for non EU students who have done a late application. Learn more about admission for non EU citizens.

Eligibility: Applicants must previously have conducted, and passed, a minimum of one year of full time university studies, 60 credits (60 ECTS) or the equivalent + home assignment.
Applicants are required to show a high level of English proficiency (equivalent to English B/6 from Swedish Upper Secondary School). Read More.

A late application means that we look at each application according to the date when the application is complete (applicant is eligible according to University Admissions and home assignment have arrived at UID).
It can be of importance to complete your application as soon as possible since if you wait too long we might have filled the study places.

How to apply?

FIRST STEP: Apply at

Pay application fee, if you are non EU citizen. Non-EU applicants pay an application fee of 900 SEK. If you are EU citizen, you must submit documentation of your citizenship status to confirm that you do not need to pay application or tuition fees. Read more.
(We are not allowed to look at your application until payment have been done or documentation of citizenship have been confirmed.)

All supporting documents should be uploaded or sent to University Admissions, except home assignment. Important: keep your registration/application number for further steps.

SECOND STEP: Create and send in a home assignment directly to Umeå Institute of Design.

Home assignment

  1. Download the home assignment.
    If you have sent in a portfolio to one of our Master programmes this spring 2019, please send an e-mail with your name and application number to and you will receive more information.

  2. Submit the home assignments in physical format. If no specification is made in the
    instructions, you may draw, cut and paste, use a computer, and utilise materials of your choice. The home assignment pages can be in standing (portrait) or landscape A4/letter format, using papers of your own choice.

  3. Write your application number (received from, 8 or 9 digit number) on each page of the home assignment tasks, and your name on the back side of each paper.

  4. Write "IDI" on the envelope, and send it by postal service (ordinary mail) to:

    If sending your home assignment with a delivery firm, please instead use: Umeå Institute of Design, Umeå University, Östra Strandgatan 28 A, SE-903 33 Umeå, Sweden. Please note that assignments sent by postal service (ordinary mail) to this address will not arrive at UID.

  5. Make sure your home assignment arrives at UID as soon as possible.
    Home assignments which arrives after April 30, 2019 will not be accepted.

  • visualisation and visual communication skills

  • ability to explain ideas

  • sketching skills and potential for developing these skills

What happens next?

We will look at the applications/home assignments according to the date they arrive and considered to be complete.

Notification status

Notification of the selection results are sent out via University Admissions. Please note that we cannot answer specific inquiries about admission prior to the official notification.
