Admissions to MFA in Advanced Product Design

 General facts

About 10-12 students are admitted to the programme every year, plus 2 exchange students may be accepted for one or two semesters.

Admission is based on applicant's documentation, portfolio and an interview.

The programme is taught in English.

Tuition fees are covered by Swedish government grants for EU citizens. Scholarships are available for non EU students. Learn more about tuition fees and scholarship for non EU citizens.

Eligibility
Bachelor's degree, in industrial design or equivalent subject area which should include at least 60 ECTS credits in the Design subject + Portfolio.
Proficiency in English equivalent to Swedish upper secondary course English B/6. Read More.

 

Application step by step

APPLICATION at University Admissions for study year 2019/2020 opens in October.
You can only apply to UID programmes in the First admission round, autumn semester at University Admissions. (UID programmes do not participate in the Second admission round, autumn semester nor in the Spring Admission rounds.)
This means that UID programmes are not open for "late applications".

October 16, 2018 - Application will open
The on-line application service at universityadmissions.se is open. Follow the instructions! All documents should be uploaded or sent to University Admissions, except portfolio and motivation letter. Important: keep your personal application number for further steps.

You are required to upload a letter of motivation and digital portfolio. Both files should be PDFs. The portfolio should be optimized for screen viewing (landscape format). Note that no printed portfolios/ physical media (CD, DVD, USB-stick) will be accepted.

Last day to apply through universityadmissions.se

February 1, 2019
Last day for supporting academic documents to be uploaded at University Admissions.
Last day to upload your portfolio at UID web.

Deadline for application fee:
If you are non EU citizen, pay the application fee of 900 SEK.
If you are EU/EEA citizen, submit the documentation of your citizenship status to confirm that you do not need to pay application or tuition fees. Read more.

 
Please note that communication about your admission process will be handled through your University Admission account, which you create when you apply.

Portfolio requirement

The portfolio should contain several work samples and project results and should ideally display and communicate your work and thinking process and creative skills.
The digital portfolio (PDF) should be optimized for screen viewing (landcape format).
If you have video published on-line, relevant to your portfolio and application, please include these as a web link in the PDF version of your portfolio (and password if needed).

We look at your ability to visually communicate your:

  • Way of using sketching as a visualization and ideation tool

  • Present 2D and 3D software skills

  • Understanding of 3D and physical form

  • Knowledge of industrial production and technology in general

  • Ability to identify and solving problems through creative methods and thinking

  • Personal expression of design and form language

  • Experience with individual and group work

  • Overall attitude and approach to industrial design

  • "Factor X" (What makes you special!)

Motivation letter

Using maximum one page (A4 size), please describe the reasons why you would like to specialise in the MFA programme in Advanced Product Design.

 

Selection process

The selection process based on the applicant´s portfolio is done in two steps. In the first step about 20-30 applications are shortlisted by the recruitment group. Shortlisting is based solely on the talent displayed in the portfolios. Applicants who are shortlisted to the second part of the selection process will be contacted for an interview.

Notification status

April 4, 2019  
Notification of the selection results is sent out via University Admissions.
