An IR Thermometer for Brand X

2019 Product Analysis and Construction

5-week course

 

Objective

The goal of the course is to introduce the complexities of product development and construction through a number of software tutorials and a creative design assignment as well practising designing within a specified number of work hours.

Work method

In the first phase of the course a series of off-the-shelve infrared thermometers were disassembled and analysed in terms of function, materials and construction. 
In the second phase the solid modelling software SolidWorks was introduced on an individual basis, depending on the student's previous experience. As a part of the software tutoring, the students modelled the thermometers internal components as references for later work. 
In the third phase the students were asked to, within a specified number of "billable hours" for the ideation phase, create a new design for the thermometer based on the selection and analysis of a brand of their own choice. 
Brands that the students chose as starting points for their styling exploration were: Nikon, IKA, Braun, POC, Stelton, Tupperware, BergHOFF, Bodum, Samsung, Festo, Logitech, Siemens, Weber and Muji.

Result

The fourth and final phase covered the production of a full functional prototype, first by modelling shell-parts for rapid prototyping, followed by the assembling the new parts with the existing components. At the final presentation the working prototype was shown and demonstrated.
