2012 Product Analysis and Parametric Modelling

5-week course


The goal of the course is to introduce the complexities of product development and construction as well as a variety of professional tools. 

In the first phase of the course the solid modelling software SolidWorks is introduced on an individual basis, depending on the student's previous experience. 
In the second phase a given product, this year a screwdriver from Meec, was disassembled and analysed in terms of function, materials and construction. As the last step in this phase the students modelled the screwdriver's electronic components in SolidWorks.

In the third phase the students had to make a new design of the screwdriver that had been given to them. This year the assignment was to select a brand and analyze the aesthetics and values of the products within that brand. They were then to design a new screwdriver that would go with the values of the selected brand.

The fourth and final phase covered the production of a full functional prototype, first by modelling for rapid prototyping, then rapid prototyping the new product shells followed by model building and assembly with the existing components and finally a presentation and demonstration of the working prototype.
