Prototyping Radios for Brand X

2010 Product Analysis and Parametric Modelling

5-week course

The goal of the course is to introduce the complexities of product development and construction as well as a variety of professional tools.
In the first phase of the course the solid modelling software SolidWorks is introduced on an individual basis, depending on the student's previous experience.
In the second phase the students were, for the second year in a row, given a cheap copy of Tivoli Audio's PAL radio. The radio was then disassembled and analysed in terms of function, materials and construction. As the last step of this phase the students modelled the radio's electronic components in SolidWorks.
In the third phase the students had to make a new design for each of the radios that had been given to them. This year the assignment was to design the new radio for a brand that are not producing radios today, which brands this should be was up to the students to define.
The fourth and final phase covered the production of a full functional prototype, first by modelling for rapid prototyping, then rapid prototyping the new product shells followed by model building and assembly with the existing components and finally a presentation and demonstration of the working prototype.
