2010 Emerging Technology

10-week term project


Background

The three term-projects at the APD programme essentially have the same basic goal, but the point of departure is quite different. In this 3rd and last term project, the students do not start with a given user group or a specific brand or an obvious problem, but with an emerging technology, in this case - Robotics. In the brief time at hand the students studies the history of robotics, where it is today and tries to get a picture of the opportunities inherent within this field of technology, with the goal of finding innovative applications and conceptualize new relevant types of service robotics.

Work Method

The project started with a crash-study in robotics with research and an introductive lecture from John Folkesson, a research scientist with hands-on experience in underwater navigation for autonomous systems from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the United States, and who is presently working at the Centre for Autonomous Systems (CAS) at the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) in Stockholm. At the end of the week, the research material was pooled and a brainstorming was held to search for applications and design opportunities. During the following week, supplementary research was done and the students wrote their own, individual design briefs describing what problem they had decided to address and how they intended to solve it. 
The final presentation consisted of a digital presentation describing the problem and method employed, presentation models and posters describing the project. The result was 6 different concepts for new useful autonomous solutions covering a wide range of design opportunities like: Robots for hyperbaric welding for maintenance and construction of underwater infrastructures, autonomous railroad inspections for improved transport Postersafety, collection of smaller plastic debris in the great pacific garbage patch, intelligent inflatable rescue equipment in case of a flash flood rescues, green house robots to assist with vertical farming and semi-autonomous transport of patients in future care-talking facilities.
