Travel grants and funding

The below links can be helpful for finding grants or funding to cover travel costs, conference fees, printing costs and also for submitting research funding proposals. Some of the below research funding organisations also offer travel grants, so do check those links as well.

Bo Rydin Foundation offers travel grants for doctoral students who wish to participate in scientific conferences and also grants for master´s thesis (30 credits). The aim of the Foundation is to promote research in the technical or natural sciences at Swedish universities and institutes within SCA´s strategic areas, hygiene and forest products.

Grants for teachers' exchange

Staff exchange programs. There are several staff exchange possiblitities through the different agreements between Umeå University and other institutions all over the world. Check out the Erasmus+ for teachers and staff  and the Linnaeus-Palme program.

Grants for research exchange

FLEXIT is a programme funded by Riksbankens Jubileumsfond, within which researchers can apply to spend between 6 months and a year at a company or organisation. Calls for Flexit researcher applications close in January/February yearly.

Research funding

The below foundations are the some of the main sources for research funding in Sweden. Types of research activities that can be funded are basic research projects, projects within a specific area or topic, conference support, post-doc positions, visiting professors, printing costs etc., depending on the foundation aims and on the formulation of the calls. A more extensive list of national research funding organisations is found here. For deadlines and guidelines, see the information on the respective sites. Grant's Office at UmU can assist with information about EU project applications and other international research cooperations.

Ångpanneföreningens Forskningsstiftelse . Apply for funding of research projects in the fields of energy, sustainability, environment, security and forest industry processes and products. Funding is also available for PhD project equipment, and travel grants for conference particpation, degree work or research periods at other institutes. Apply before March 31, 2014. 

STINT, the Swedish Foundation for International Cooperation in Research and Higher Education, STINT announces scholarships for researchers at Swedish universities that want to start new international collaborations. STINT announces three institutional collaborative projects with duration of up to four years. The programmes are: Institutional Grants, Korea-Sweden Research Cooperation Programme, Joint Brazilian-Swedish Research Collaboration. It is also possible to apply for Initiation Grants for shorter start-up projects.

The Swedish Research Council is the largest state funding agency for basic research at Swedish universities.The Research Council provides support for research within research infrastructures, medicine, humanities and social science, natural and engineering sciences, and also educational sciences and artistic research and development. The Council also grants funding for arranging conferences. Calls usually open in February and close in March or April.

Vetenskapsrådet: Swedish research links
The Swedish Research Links program offers grants for international collaborative research projects of high scientific quality and of mutual relevance for scientists in Sweden and scientists in Asia, the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), Africa, Latin America and Europe. Scientists in basic and applied research within all academic areas are now welcome to apply for funding. The grant may be used for joint activities, such as research visits between the partners, workshops and seminars. The grant must not be used for salaries or scholarships. Last application date is May 7 2012.

The Wallenberg foundations
The Wallenberg Foundations is the group name of the public private Foundations which are funded by a member of the Wallenberg Family. The different foundations fund scientific research, scholarships and cultural activities in various fields.

The Swedish Governmental Agency for Innovation Systems  is Sweden's innovation agency. Focus is on strengthening Sweden's innovativeness, aiding sustainable growth and benefiting society, and their calls for proposals relate to these areas.

The Swedish Research Council Formas annual open call most often open around February 25 for applications for grants for research and development projects within the Research Council's three areas of responsibility - Environment, Agricultural Sciences and Spatial Planning. The council awards Grants for research and development projects, Grants for research and development projects for young research leaders and Grants for mobility starting grant for young researchers.

The Swedish Research Council for Health, Working Life and Welfare. Forte supports research projects within these areas, and also creates research positions at Swedish universities and provides grants for visiting researchers as well as scholarships for post-doc studies abroad.

Axel & Margareta Ax:son Johnson foundationThe Axel and Margaret Ax:son Johnson Foundation is a private foundation whose principal objective is to facilitate scientific research in general. We have in particular chosen to benefit the liberal arts and the social sciences.

Grants for printing costs

Several of the above research foundations can also grant funding for printing costs ("tryckbidrag") for disseratations and other scientific or artistic publications.
