How to Live with Many Medicines

Abstract

How can I create a new safer way for patients to handle their medicine?

In Sweden about half of all the patients that are using medicine are doing it in the wrong way. This leads to patients getting impaired treatment results. The Swedish care system and hospitals also lose a lot of money treating the patients that arrives to the ER because of medication errors.

There are four important parts that every patient has to think about, these are; which medicine are you going to take, which dose and with what, and last what are you going to do after you have taken it?

If the patients are following these guides they should have no problem with their medication. But they do not. How can I create a new safer way for patients to handle their medicine?

Inspiration and Method

During this project I have been working close to my users and other professions in the care and pharmaceutical areas. From these people I have collected a lot of information about how it is to handle a lot of medicines and also how different they can be. This can be hard for patients to remember, even though they have it written down.
I have been inspired from natural elements, color and materials. I wanted products that can be interacted in peoples homes.

From that I made a lot of sketches and models to get a feeling of form and sizes. User tested it and worked with it again and then decided a final form for my two products. The color of the products is important so I had to make some tests to see how people perceive different colors. This led me to my final products.

Result

The result is a modular system composed of two products that will store and systemize medicine for patients.

The first product is boxes in different sizes depending on which type of medicine the patient has to store. The boxes vary in height, but have the same measurements otherwise. These are stackable to give the patients a possibility to build their own storage system.

The second product is a pill dispenser. The patient puts the pills in this product so they can get help with remembering and systemizing them. On the pill dispenser an alarm is positioned which helps the patient to remember which medicine has to be taken. Also how the patient is supposed to take it and when to take it. The pill dispenser is also composed of modules consisting of one module per day. Because of that, the patient can bring one days portion out from their home to have a normal every day life. The alarm can also sense which daily dose it is connected to so that it can give the right directions.
