Breathe Couture

Abstract

Ambient (outdoor air pollution) in both cities and rural areas was estimated to cause 3.7 million premature deaths worldwide in 2012. With worse air quality in mainly China, the need and development of respirators or air pollution protection devices in general will increase drastically.

By conducting the project from an entrepreneurial point of view, new markets and ways of redefining air pollution protection were discovered. What if these filter masks that are becoming a more common element in the Chinese urban landscape could become jewelry or fashion artifacts reflecting an individuals taste and style while filtering the air in a more comfortable and efficient way?

Inspiration and Method

Result

The result, the brand and product Breathe Couture, is a smart breathing protection for urban China that through it's exclusivity and novelty creates desirability and awareness to protect oneself from bad air.

The system works almost like a PAPR (Powered Air Purifying Respirator) where air is being sucked in through the back, filtered and blown out creating an air pocket with clean air around the users mouth. Two dust sensors comparing the dust density in the air being filtered versus the mid air ensure when filter change is needed and gives the user adequate information about filtering capabilities and particle density.
