Expressive Input

Abstract

Expressive input is the culmination of 18 weeks of prototyping, ideation and research conducted as my degree project at Umeå Institute of Design.

The project presents three design provocations which aim to raise questions about the potential opportunity to create a dialogue with the physical controls we interact with.

While words like “smart” or “connected” get thrown around quite often, this work aims to show that there is a role for expression within the relationship we have with our devices.

Inspiration and Method

The inspiration for this project was to explore different input methods and try to gain understanding and context about the pros and cons of each within the context of driving.

Work involved hacking code, building models, sketching with hardware and a lot of mistakes and learning along the way.

The project was conducted by running a series of short sprints that were focused on very specific problems, the intention of this approach was to identify unique opportunities for future design work to explore.

Result

Expressive input presents three scenarios that might exist within an Automotive context, and demonstrates solutions that encourage users to maintain visual attention on the task of driving.

Layers of Interaction is a rotary control that can sense how much the user is engaging with it, and allow for greater levels of control depending on the circumstances.

Geared Modes is an exploration of affordance mapping and how future interfaces might approach the problem of mode confusion.

Dual User Interfaces presents an interface that is able to identify the user and then cater the information density to suit the user.
