Toddlers and Interactive Media
This project explores the use of phones and tablets as toys for children age 1-3. The use of interactive media like this is a highly debated topic. Both sides have good arguments and there is no clear research yet as the technology is relatively new. Parents use these products’ remarkable ability to engage children to buy themselves time for things like cleaning and cooking, which is often associated with feelings of shame and guilt. “Can a product be designed to engage children in the same way, yet promote healthy development for the child?”
The result is an interactive toy with a smartphone at the center. Using the parents phone as the brain and sensory organ for the toy allows for engaging features while keeping the cost down. The digital nature of the toy enables varied and entertaining feedback tailored to the child’s age, keeping the toy interesting for longer.
