PhD research

Design for Customization: exploring mass customization of products produced by additive manufacturing

The aim of this research is to develop a methodology for industrial designers to design customizable products produced by additive manufacturing. The role of the designer, consumer and manufacturer is changing due to developments in technology such as digital fabrication and advancements in additive manufacturing. Co-creation of products will change the tasks of the industrial designer. And the consumer as well. How will they work together? What tools do they need and what will these tools look like? In my PhD I will explore mass customization of consumer products from the designer's as well as from the consumer's perspective.

Areas of interest

Additive manufacturing, mass customization, co-creation, parametric design, digital fabrication

Upcoming

(18-19/11) Presentation at the 2011 World Conference on Mass Customization, Personalization and Co-Creation in San Francisco, USA.
